Natural Carbon Sequestration In Antarctica – A Litmus Test For Global Warming?

How cold is it in Antarctica? According to Weather Underground, Vostok, Antarctica is forecast to reach -113F on Friday. That is four degrees below the freezing point of CO2 and would cause dry (CO2) ice to freeze directly out of the air.

The south pole of Mars (seen below) similarly has an eight metre thick layer of dry (CO2) ice on top of the H2O ice.

The Mars dry ice cap has been shrinking however, due to global warming on that planet.

If Dr. Abdussamatov is correct, the Mars ice caps should now be growing, due to the solar minimum. Does anyone have any information about this? A cooler earth coincident with a cooler Mars coincident with solar minimum would be difficult to argue with.

Acoustic black hole created in Bose Einstein Condensate

One of the many curious properties of Bose Einstein Condensates (BECs) is that the flow of sound through them is governed by the same equations that describe how light is bent by a gravitational field. That sets up the possibility of all kinds of fun and games--in theory, physicists can reproduce with sound and BECs, whatever wicked way gravity has with light.

The general idea is to set up a supersonic flow of atoms within the BEC. Sound waves moving against this flow can never make any ground. So the region where the flow changes from subsonic to supersonic is an event horizon. Any sound waves (or phonons) created inside the event horizon can never escape because the flow there is supersonic. That's the black hole.

One reason why sonic black holes are so highly prized is that they ought to produce Hawking radiation. Quantum mechanics predicts that pairs of "virtual" phonons with equal and opposite momentum ought to be constantly springing in and out of existence in BECs.

Shrinking Betelgeuse

Betelgeuse's fate

It is likely that Betelgeuse will become a supernova, [3][21] which will be the brightest ever recorded, outshining the Moon in the night sky.[21] Considering its size and age of 8.5 million years – old for its size class – it may explode within the next thousand years—if it hasn't already.[21] Since its rotational axis is not toward the Earth, Betelgeuse's supernova would not cause a gamma ray burst in the direction of Earth large enough to damage its ecosystem even from a relatively close proximity of 520 light years.[21]

Nobel Laureate Charles Townes announced evidence that fifteen straight years of stellar contraction has now observed to be occuring by UC Berkeley's Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI) atop Mt. Wilson in Southern California. Reported on June 9, 2009, the star has shrunk 15% since 1993 with an increasing rate. The average speed at which the radius of the star is shrinking over the last 15 years is approximately 470-490 miles per hour.[22]

According to the university, Betelgeuse's radius is about 5.5 astronomical units, and the star's radius has shrunk by a distance equal to half an astronomical unit, or about the orbit of Venus.[23] Some theorists have speculated that this behavior is expected for a star at the beginning of the gravitational collapse at the end of its life. The mass of Betelgeuse puts it in range to become a neutron star or possibly a black hole.

Ollaanpas sitä taas ennustavalla päällä. Propsit Terasliljalle siitä, että kaivoit nyt esiin noita Nobel-palkinnon saaneita ilmastonmuutosskeptikkoja ja on kieltämättä yllätys, että löytyi yksi luonnontieteen alalta. Toki Giaever on ilmeisesti erikoistunut materiaali- ja biofysiikkaan eikä sikäli ole ilmastotieteenasiantuntija vaikka selvästi on superpätevä tiedemies kokeellisen fysiikan alalla. Fysiikan n0bel-palkittuja lienee elossa viitisenkymmentä, joten jos yksi heistä on sitä mieltä, että ihmisen osuutta ilmastonlämpenemiseen (jota Giaever pitää faktana) ei ole näytetty toteen, kyse ei vaikuta olevan keskeisestä tiedeyhteisön erimielisyydestä.

Teraslilja, olisi ihan mielenkiintoista tietää miten itse näet tämän ilmastonmuutosdebatin. Oletko sitä mieltä, että 1) ilmastonmuutos ei ole tosiasia tai 2) että ihmisen osuudesta ilmastonmuutokseen ei ole mitään (vakuuttavia) todisteita tai että 3) todisteita on molempiin suuntiin, mutta on vielä ennenaikaista sanoa asian todellinen laita? Ovatko ilmastonmuutosskeptikot vain pieni ryhmä, joita tieteen ”valtavirta” ei ota tosissaan vai ovatko he tieteellisen debatin ytimessä näkemyksineen? Jos edellinen vaihtoehto on lähempänä totuutta, mistä johtuu, että tieteen valtavirralla on vaikeuksia hyväksyä ilmastoskeptikkojen tulokset?

En jaksanut ihan loppuun asti katsoa Teräsliljan laittamia videoita, mutta ekana tuli mieleen: Miksi tuo setä käyttää kovasti aikaa sellaisen datan esittelyyn, jonka hän itsekin toteaa epäluotettavaksi (lämpötilan mittauspisteitä oli sijoitettu epäasianmukaisesti ja NASA oli vahingossa jossain vaiheessa buuttaillut jotain järjestelmiä tjsp.), eikä puhu puolta sanaa muista, luotettavammista mittaustavoista? Kuten jäätikköjä poraamalla saaduista tiedoista, joiden perusteella lämpötilat ovat kautta historian seuranneet varsin orjallisesti hiilidioksiditasoja.

Jos hän ihan tosissaan on kyseenalaistamassa hiilidioksidin ja lämpötilan yhteyksiä, olisi ehkä kannattanut jotenkin käsitellä tätä asiaa. Jos hän taas vain haluaa hinnalla millä hyvänsä saada käännytettyä ihmisiä USA:n taantumuksellisen ilmastopolitiikan taakse, hänen kannattanee olla asiasta aivan hiljaa, toivoa ettei yleisössä ole ketään joka olisi tietoinen muista mittaustavoista, ja täyttää esityksensä puhumalla jostakin muusta.

Fysiikan n0bel-palkittuja lienee elossa viitisenkymmentä, joten jos yksi heistä on sitä mieltä, että ihmisen osuutta ilmastonlämpenemiseen (jota Giaever pitää faktana) ei ole näytetty toteen, kyse ei vaikuta olevan keskeisestä tiedeyhteisön erimielisyydestä.

Etkös joskus aiemmin peräänkuuluttanut näitä noobel-voittajia? Että antakaa yksikin? Nyt kun sellainen on annettu niin konsensus on edelleen konsensus ja vääräuskoiset poltetaan edelleen roviolla. Toisekseen, minusta on vähintään kyseenalaista, että mielestäsi ilmeisesti jokainen noobel-voittaja tukee asiaasi, jollei ole erikseen ilmaissuta vastustavansa (ja sittenkin luultavasti vähän tukee tai tuen puutteella ei ole merkitystä eri tekosyistä).

On koomista, että kansainvälisen tiedeyhteisön demokraattinen konsensuksentekomalli nostaa tässä taas rumaa päätään.

Ei kun vääräuskoisia pyydetään julkaisemaan tuloksensa tieteellisissä lehdissä. Ihan oikeasti, minusta olisi todella hienoa jos todettaisiin tai edes vakavasti kyseenalaistettaisiin, että ihminen ei pysty vaikuttamaan ilmastonmuutokseen, koska silloin ei tarvitsisi polttaa ziljoonia euroja ilmiön estämiseen.
